Origin

The religious connotations behind the name come from the bonds between the winery and the clergy.

Was the clergy who first owned the estate as it had belonged to the Cathedral Chapter of Valladolid which was comprised of 22 “canónigos” (canons) –the reason for its name- The Winery is located within the municipal area of Pesquera de Duero and its boundaries were described as follows: Cañada del Indio to the east, the estate that once belonged to the monastery of Bernardos de Valbuena to the west. Valdemadera’s area, in the Pesquera municipal area, and the forest to the north and the Duero river to the south. There was a forest in the area that included species such as pine, oak and juniper.

But the situation changed in mid-19th century, with the so-called “Desamortización de Mendizábal” (dissentailment of the Church property). The process affected all Secular Clergy’s property that became “state property” pursuant to the Act of 2nd September 1841, which endorsed the use of this property in order to extinguish or reduce the State debt (1836-1853).

From 1842 to 1931

Therefore, Dehesa de los Canónigos was valued and sold to the highest bidder in 1842, Mr. Toribio de Lecanda y del Campo. Toribio, a wealthy businessman from the Basque Country, built his home reproducing his Basque country house to evoke memories of his beloved land. The current owners also live in that same country house.
His grandfather, Teodosio de Lecanda y Chaves, a Belgian engineer, who got married to Emilia de Ulloa got in Valladolid, built some large warehouses which initially were used as silos. Nowadays this construction houses the outstanding Bodega Dehesa de los Canónigos

These warehouses, which are over 150 years old and have been already restored, still hold majestic beams and 80-cm-thick adobe walls, which are an excellent isolation system to reach the most suitable temperature for wine making and ageing.

Oddly enough, after all this time the Sanz Cid family, the winery’s current owners, maintains good relationship with Georgina Lecanda, Teodosio de Lecanda y Chaves’ great granddaughter.

Nevertheless, they were not the only owners. Actually, in successive years it has belonged to Clemente Mazariegos first and later to the businessman and senator Gregorio Garcia Garrote.

From 1931 to 1969

In 1931, Idelfonso Cid, married to Vicenta Sánchez, the current owners’ grandparents, bought Dehesa de los Canónigos. Idelfonso and Vicenta, who originally belonged to a family of flour merchants, were informed about Luz’s disease (their daughter) and were advised by doctors about the benefits of country life to ease their daughter’ suffering. For these reasons, they decided to sell their property and buy Dehesa de los Canónigos.

The main characters of this new stage are: Arturo Cid, married to Amalia García, and Juan Cid, married to Rosario Alonso. The two brothers –the true mainstay of the business until the 60’s- chose to sell but thanks God the property was again for sale. It was then when Luis and Mª Luz, driven by the latter’s passion for her family’s estate, which was a witness of her childhood, convinced Arturo to get it back despite of the great efforts Luis had to make and his decision to abandon the medical school. It was a drastic decision, indeed, but quite logical at the same time due to the deep affection he felt for his father in law.

From 1969 up to the present

Luis Sanz Busto, the son of Asterio Sanz, a building material supplier in Valladolid, and the son of Rutila Busto, the daughter of well-known farmers from Camporredondo, through great effort, work and love, was able to help the family business to survive through the third generation, during this new stage. As a result he was rewarded with the 1996 Businessman of the Year Award in the Grape and Wine sector.
Luis and Mª Luz live with their four children. Among them, two, Belen and Iván, are related to the wine world, and the other two, Marta and Luis, followed their father’s example in the medical field.

After having shared their interest for farming and vine growing with their father and grandfather since their childhood, currently Belen and Iván are the one who enthusiastically carry the weight of business. Their education along with the support provided by their expert and knowledgeable father who has encouraged them to love this land, have helped them to deal with this complex but rewarding job. Brother and sister, in conjunction but playing different roles, (Belen as the Technical Manager and Iván responsible for vine growing tasks and wine commercialization) work to further develop this project his father strongly believed in, keeping alive these wines of an outstanding quality.

The wine-related tourism is the new project Iván and Belen have been committed to. Their intention is to pass on the culture of this land and these wines. For that reason, they have restored the facilities next to the country house and cellar (the old stables) with the support of their mother who is passionate about interior design. Two large and comfortable rooms for events and meetings, all surrounded by courtyards and green gardens of different ambient, are now available.
