Félix Martínez Lacuesta founded the bodega in 1895, together with his brothers. He was the first president of the National Society of Winemakers and Associated Industries and he directed the La Rioja Wine Syndicate.

Winemaker, Politician and Promotor. Félix Martínez Lacuesta (Haro 1873 – 1922) obtained a law doctorate from the University of Madrid. When barely 21 he founded the bodega. Don Félix, lawyer, politician and businessman, a moving force at the turn of the century, was the first president of the National Society of Winemakers and Associated Industries and president of the La Rioja Wine Syndicate. He was president of the Logroño Diputación (Regional Council) from 1913 to 1915 and Civil Governor of Teruel and Zaragoza in 1916. These activities led to a long series of papers, articles and pamphlets on the Ebro Valley Region and Free Ports, collected and published in 1916 in a book entitled “Agricultural Policy”.

At the same time he set in motion what is today the Denominación de Origen de Rioja and its Regulatory Council, as representative of the bodega owners.

He and his brothers Alfonso, Julio, José María, José Crescencio and Emiliano formed the company which was the embryonic version of what today is Bodegas Martínez Lacuesta.

The bodega remains family business generations later; all its shares have stayed in family hands. It is one of the Hundred-Year Old Rioja Bodegas.
